This is really a must read novel. It really is a moving book that can really open your eyes to the struggles and horrors of segregation. This book made me really realize how much I take for granted everyday. I never realized the true pain and heart ache of someone in her shoes would face. This also shows the strength of feminism with such a strong influence of female characters. I would recomend his book to really anyone looking to read a classic. This really is an inspiring and uplifting novel in the end. It shows that to learn in life times are going to be rough, and you got to get through the pain to get to the good. I really learned more about myself through this coming to age novel. I really couldn’t put this book down. I enjoy the writing styles of Maya Angelou with her witty sassy sense of humor and her very descriptive writing style. This novel made me somewhat sickened with what segregated America was like. It makes me have a new perspective on history. The novel makes me feel a little relived to live in the time I do. Overall I would recomend to someone that also has a commitment to a novel becuase in the end the book really does come all torgether. It’s definitely worth reading all the way through. She does provide a good insight on just how awful being a young African American women in a time rascism and sexism had an over powering oppression on American society. There’s was some very serious and real scenes that showed how her innocence was taken. It showed how she had to grow up a lot sooner than anyone should. So with that I gives some caution to the next reader because it does have some very sensitive content. But that doesn’t take away from how good and moving this novel is. This made me feel more humbled as a person to read this book. There were some scenes that in a sense were relatable, (with a little interpatation of course). It makes me gain a lot of more respect for strong civil rights activist like Maya Angolou. Even though this book was an autobiography type format she didn’t just speak for herself but as a whole movement. This really brought to life the true importance of novels and freedom of speech.
