Author’s PurposeThis novel was written to purely show how the struggles and the power to overcome the trauma and rascistism in America through the eyes of a little girl that repsents Maya Angelou herself. Maya Angelou really wanted to stress the influence of strong African American women roles in segregated America. Her novel was meant to break the normal ideaology and social standards of racism that was expected of people in America. She also touches on the importance of education and how it impacted her life as a young black student in a time were education was not only looked down upon by women to get an education, but also African Americans. She wanted to convey her strengths and her struggles. Angelou wanted the novel to also be of comfort to those who also face and experienced similar struggles. Her writing is a strong voice that delegates a struggles of an out cry that personally effect so many people. She really relates with the main character which is herself. Maya Angelou was born April 4th, 1928 in St. Louis Missouri, but she grew up in Stamps, Arkansas with her grandmother and brother. Growing up she faced a lot of racism and segregation first hand.
